It has been a difficult year for global equities, with volatility caused by factors such as concern about trade wars leaving many of the world's stock markets in retreat.

For example, share indices in the UK, Germany, Japan and Canada have declined this year when measured in local currencies, and the key US market has recorded only a small gain. Investor sentiment faces pitfalls ranging from concern about the pace of interest rate rises to mounting indications the current world economic expansion has peaked.
