Baillie Gifford has brought Christopher Howarth onto its £459m European fund, which has struggled to outperform in recent years.

Howarth joined the current fund managers Chris Davies and Stephen Paice on 1 January 2024.

In 2019, Howarth joined the firm on its trainee investment manager graduate scheme and worked in the global income growth and US growth teams for his first two years, before joining the European team in 2022.

James Budden, director of marketing and distribution, said: "In his two years on the European team, Christopher has made a significant contribution to both research and the investment process. Increasing his responsibilities is a natural step in his development and a recognition of his contribution."

Over the last three years, the fund is down 28.8%, compared to the IA Europe excluding UK sector's gain of 14.9% over the same period, according to data from FE fundinfo.
